ABOUT
THE PROJECT
Project Description
The Meta Kibun Project is a digital interactive audio-visual installation developed as part of Honours research in Media and Communication at RMIT University. The project investigates how touch and colour in digital interactive artworks can shape audiences’ affective experiences in exhibition settings, drawing on Korean cultural concepts of emotional nuance, kibun (기분), a Korean term translated as “mood” or “feeling.”
Through tactile interaction with real roses and water, audiences trigger layered 3D visuals, soundscapes, and colour shifts that reflect the complexity and dualities of emotion. The work positions audiences as performers and co-creators, encouraging reflection on the subtle, situated nature of feeling beyond fixed emotional categories.
As part of the research, audience participation extends to interviews and surveys. These responses will be transcribed, analysed, and included in the final exegesis and an accompanying research publication, extending discussions on interactivity, audience, affect, and cultural diversity in digital interactive art, particularly how tactile and culturally situated forms of engagement shape audience experience.
HOW TO
Instructions
Prompt:
How is your kibun 기분—mood or feeling—today?
Take a moment to notice, explore, and name it in your own words.
1. Watch
View the short, non-interactive version of the artwork (2 min, table on the right).
2. Choose
Select a colour and a Korean suffix (or invent your own) that resonates with your feeling. Korean colour terms carry subtle emotional nuances.
Touch the water in bowls to change colour/suffix, and the water in bowls with flowers to change visuals.
Examples:
Yellow + chwng → Yellow-chwng (a gloomy yellow)
Blue + malssuk → Blue-malssuk (a watery, washed-out blue)
Red + kki → Red-kki (an intense, sharp red)
Green + your own word → Green-quiet (a calming green)
3. Explore & Label
Touch the roses to trigger effects, glitchy or soft and beautiful.
Reflect on your feeling and name it in any language.
Examples:
Yellow-chwng
A restless pink
A heavy grey
Blue-malssuk
4. Share
Complete your experience by sharing your label in the survey.
